Make Your Own Pancake Wreath

You asked me to show you how to make a pancake wreath, and today I’m delivering! This isn’t my design, but whenever I can, I try to give you what you ask for so I got on YouTube and learned how to do it! Watch the video below to see the fabulous results.

You guys, this project is so quick and really inexpensive to make! If I wouldn’t have been gabbing the whole time I could have made one pancake wreath in about 15 minutes. And, since we don’t want them to be poofy and thick, we use fewer supplies so the cost stays low. I just know you’re going to love this one!

How to Make a Pancake Wreath

Pancake wreaths get their name, because compared to other wreaths, they are “as flat as a pancake.” These wreaths are perfect for people who live in climates that require storm doors to keep out the elements. These flat creations fit right in between the storm door and the main door. The wreaths I make in this video come in at just under four inches thick, you guys!

Pancake wreaths are meant to be thin, so I resisted the temptation to add bows and tubing. If you like the look of the wreath but don’t need to worry about the thickness of it on your own door, you could always add more embellishments and really spice things up! If you are a wreath seller, however, and doing shows in areas that have storm doors, this could be a great money maker for you just the way it is!

As usual, while making these wreaths, I had the opportunity to roll with the punches. I meant to cut my mesh in 15” strips, but ended up doing them in 10” strips instead. Oops! But here’s the thing, it doesn’t matter! There are no rules when it comes to crafting, you make your own rules. The 10” strips still made an adorable wreath and I loved the way it turned out. Just as with cooking, a crafting recipe is only a list of guidelines and suggestions. You do you!

Patriotic Pancake Wreath Supplies

• Blue 10” deco mesh
• Red and white striped 10” deco mesh
• 3 different 2 ½” patriotic ribbons (I used navy with tan stars, red white and blue stripes, red white and blue stars)
• Wreath form
• 12 pipe cleaners
• Scissors

Patriotic Wreath Instructions

1. First add your 12 pipe cleaners to the wreath frame. Start by adding one around the outside two rails then the inside two rails. Alternate like this until all the pipe cleaners have been added evenly around the form. It will look like a zig-zag pattern when you are done.
2. Next, cut your mesh. You want 15” strips. Cut 4 strips of the blue mesh and 8 strips of the red and white striped mesh.
3. Next, take a piece of your blue mesh, turn it curl side down, and scrunch down the center from cut side to cut side to make a ruffle. Attach it at the center to one of the pipe cleaners. Now, take the edges and overlap then flatten them. Your ruffle will now look almost like a flat circle.
4. Repeat with the remainder of your blue mesh strips then continue with the red and white striped mesh strips. Since there is less blue on the wreath, you want it to show through more. To do this, overlap the blue over the red and white striped mesh where the two patterns meet.
5. Using each of your three ribbons cut 8- 12” strips. Dove tail the ends.
6. Put two of the blue ribbons together, fold at the center, then gently pinch. Add the center point to one of the pipe cleaners on the blue mesh. Repeat with remaining blue ribbon tails and the remaining pipe cleaners over the blue mesh. Point the ribbon tail ends away from the center and towards the outside.
7. Now, use the same method with the striped ribbon and the starred ribbon. Attach them to alternate twist ties through the remainder of the wreath form.

Flamingo Pancake Wreath Supplies

• Pink 10” deco mesh
• Black and white striped 10” deco mesh
• Flamingo wreath sign
• 2 ½” wired ribbon (I used pink, lime green, black and white polka dot, and multi colored striped)
• Wreath form
• Pipe cleaners
• Scissors
• Foam board
• Glue
• Staple gun

DIY Flamingo Wreath Instructions

1. First add your 12 pipe cleaners to the wreath frame. Start by adding one around the outside two rails then the inside two rails. Alternate like this until all the pipe cleaners have been added evenly around the form. It will look like a zig-zag pattern when you are done.
2. Next, cut your mesh. You want 15” strips. Cut 6 strips of the pink mesh and 6 strips of the black and white striped mesh.
3. Next, take a piece of your pink mesh, turn it curl side down, and scrunch down the center from cut side to cut side to make a ruffle. Attach it at the center to one of the pipe cleaners. Now, take the edges and overlap then flatten them. Your ruffle will now look almost like a flat circle.
4. Repeat with another piece of pink mesh so that you have two pinks next to each other. Next do the same with two pieces of black and white striped mesh. Repeat this pattern for the remainder of the wreath.
5. Using each of your four ribbons cut 6- 12” strips. Dove tail the ends.
6. Put one pink and one striped ribbon together, fold at the center, then gently pinch. Add the center point to one of the pipe cleaners. Using the same method, put one lime green and one polka dot ribbon together. Alternate these two pattern combos like you did the mesh: pink then pink and then green then green. Point the ribbon tail ends away from the center and towards the outside.
7. Cut two foam squares and glue them to the back of your flamingo sign to keep your staples from popping through the front. Then staple two pipe cleaners to those foam squares.
8. Use the pipe cleaners to attach the flamingo to the center of the wreath.
