Fall is coming on quickly. The days are getting shorter and cooler. Today, I’m painting a scarecrow face that is adorable and perfect for your autumn decor!

When the kids go back to school and the leaves begin to change their colors, we know it’s time to start thinking about fall decorations. You guys know that I love cute characters, and today’s project does not disappoint! I’m painting a scarecrow face for you, and I’m so excited for you to see how it turns out. I love scarecrows for fall, because you can do so much with the colors and styles. I use some super cute ribbon as my inspiration for this cut out, and the colors I chose are so cute together!

Fall projects are some of my favorites to design. I just love the shades of color that autumn brings. I also love the themes of harvest and gratitude that accompany this season. Here in Vegas, fall means that we start to get some much needed relief from the heat! I know that those of you who live in cooler climates get to enjoy all of the comfy cool weather traditions too. I see you Pumpkin Spice Patty and Cozy Sweater Sally!

When you start painting this scarecrow wood cut out, keep in mind that these guys are a scuffed and mussed breed of characters. In the video you’ll see that I let some of the wood grain peak through in spots. I do that to give this guy a more rough and textured look. I also use shading to give a scuffed look to some spots. You don’t want your scarecrow to be too neat and tidy so these are great ways to (gently) rough him up a bit. Little details like that are what give your creations a unique and fabulous finish.

I have to share a tip with you guys today! If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I love to use a Lazy Susan to hold the piece that I’m painting. This is the type of project where it really comes in handy! The Lazy Susan allows me to rotate my piece as often as I need to without having to worry about picking it up and smudging my paint. I needed to go back and add details to this project and being able to keep rotating made that so easy. If you like to paint I highly recommend grabbing yourself one of these tools!

Scarecrow Face Paint-by-Line Instructions

Start by painting the whole face, including the hair, with the cream color. Don’t worry about covering the hair outlines, you’ll still be able to see them.
Next, paint the collar light blue.
Now use the kelly green to paint the hat.
Use the light green to add shading along the inside edges of the hat.
Next, paint the patch and the outline of hat orange.
Use the black paint marker to trace the lines on the face: eyes, mouth, and stitches.
Use the orange paint to add a triangle nose.
Use the nutmeg brown to fill in the hair.
Use the fine point paint marker to draw stitches on the edge of the nose.
Use the regular paint marker to outline the patch, add inner outlines to the collar, and outline the outside of the orange hat outline.

This scarecrow face turned out so cute, you guys! I love how the colors complement each other and the ribbon I picked out. Now I’ll be able to make a fabulous wreath using the scarecrow face and the ribbon will coordinate perfectly! You could also use this cute piece as a stand alone decor item. However you display him, this little guy is sure to please.
