How to Paint a Frankenstein Head

Halloween is such a fun time of year. There are so many amazing projects that revolve around it and today I’m showing you how to make one of my favorites: a Frankenstein head.

I am excited to share this project with you because it is simple and just screams Halloween! There are few Halloween characters as popular as the bolted monster, and I love the way this one turned out. In the video below, I show you how to make an adorable Frankenstein head using a stencil, graphite paper, and a wood blank. Then we get to painting!

Painting a Frankenstein Head

Sure Halloween can be a spooky holiday, but it is also about being creative and silly while hopped up on candy and taffy apples. What could be better than that? The creativity comes in all sorts of variety too. From fabulous crafts to clever costumes, people go all out with their ingenuity. And let’s not forget the food creations that look disgusting but taste amazing!

There are so many opportunities for using your imagination with this holiday. I really love seeing the creative homemade costumes that people come up with. My favorite part of Halloween, though, is coming up with new craft designs every year. I love trying out different things to see what I love and what I think you’ll love!

While we now have the lines included in almost all of our wood cuts, this is a great way for you to create your own at home. You can find so many great stencils on line to use for this project. Then all you need is some graphite paper which allows you to transfer your stencil lines onto your wood blank. After that it’s all sorts of fun because it is time to paint!

Frankenstein Head Supply List

• Wood blank
• Graphite paper
• PDF stencil
• Pencil
• Acrylic paint in green, lime green, black, and gray

Frankenstein Head Instructions

1. Take your wood blank and lay the graphite paper down on top of it with the shiny side down.
2. Line up the stencil on your blank and place it on top of the graphite paper.
3. Use your pencil to trace the lines on your stencil. This will transfer the design to the wood blank. Be sure to hold your stencil steady as you trace so the design will transfer correctly.
4. Remove the stencil and graphite paper and you are ready to paint!
5. Start by using the green paint to fill in the face. Leave the outer eyes, nose, mouth, and scar blank for now.
6. Next, use the black to paint all around the face. This includes the scar, mouth, and outer eye.
7. Now, use the lime green to add shading. Do this along the bottom of the hair line, in the round eye corners, left of the nose, along the chin line, at the left temple, and on the outside left of each tooth.
8. Continue shading with the gray. Do this above the hair line, inside the scar, the corners of the head, inside the ears, inside the bolts, inside the mouth along the left side, and the inside on the right of each tooth.

And that’s it! This project is so fun to do and it doesn’t take much time. There are so many things you could do with your Frankenstein head too. He would make a great door or wall hanger. Or you could set him on a shelf. You could also add him in a Halloween treat basket for a friend. However you decide to display him I hope he brings you lots of joy this Halloween season!
