I love all things patriotic and I especially love this adorable summer project! Today I’m showing you how to decorate a patriotic sunflower wreath rail that is sure to put you in the summer frame of mind.
I can never decide if I love painting rails or decorating them better. This project was definitely a win win for me, I just love everything about it. In the video below I show you how to decorate a patriotic sunflower wreath rail that is easy to do and oh so cute! If you want to paint your own sunflower you can snag one in our shop and then watch the video where I show you how to paint this cutie. Or you can order it already painted. You can even attach your own patriotic sign to a wreath rail. Once you have your rail all ready to go, get ready to decorate with me!
How to Decorate a Patriotic Sunflower Wreath Rail
Anytime I am able to create a new patriotic design I am a happy girl. I really love this sunflower because of its cross between flower and flag. Something about that blend adds a lot of dimension to the design. The patriotic sunflower is adorable by itself but you know I can’t just leave it at that! A little mesh, ribbon, and bling and this wreath rail will be the star of the show.
I don’t tend to work with 12” wreath rails very often but every time I do I remember why they are popular. We don’t all love a big and beautiful front door decoration and these 12” rails are the perfect fit for those who don’t. The smaller size also means that you will need fewer supplies to make the rail look really full. That means you could make a whole bunch of these beauties and offer them for sale in your shop or at craft shows.
One of my favorite things about this design is that I get to use patriotic garland in it! Garland makes a super fun addition to any wreath rail and you can find it for just about every season. I really love to hit the craft stores right after a holiday and see if I can snag any of the garlands when they go on sale. That way I always have a rotating stock and I can add them to whatever I want without having to worry about charging people too much extra for them. Plus, they are just so fun!

Instructions for Decorating a Patriotic Sunflower Wreath Rail
- Start by using the rapid fuse glue to attach the cable tie mount to the back of the rail, at the top.
- While the glue is drying, take a piece of tape and wrap it around the end of the jute string. If you have pliers, use them to flatten out the tape really well. This will help you to string it through the mounting square. Decide how long you want your loop to be and trim the string accordingly. Tie a knot to make your loop and then slide the knot back into the cable tie mount.
- Now put your pipe cleaners onto the rail. One at each end and one at the center. Push the pipe cleaner through the top gap and wrap it around the bottom and then twist it together at the rail.
- Next, use the rotary cutter to cut 3- 20” strips of mesh.
- Tubing (black and blue)
- Then curl up the ends of one of your strips and then scrunch up the center to make a ruffle. Add it to one of your pipe cleaners, curls up. Repeat with the other two pieces of mesh and pipe cleaners.
- Now use the ribbon tail board to cut 3- 21” ribbon tails of each of your three ribbons. Dovetail the ends of all of them.
- Take one of each type of ribbon tail and place one on top of the other. Fold the tails in half and pinch the center together. Attach the center pinch to a twist tie on the wreath rail. Repeat with the remaining ribbon tails and twist ties.
- Cut 3- 16” strips of both colors of tubing. Put one of each color together and make a loop. Attach the center of the loop to a twist tie. Repeat with the other 2 ties.
- Next, take the end of the garland and attach it to the tie at one end of the rail. Loop it as you go along the rail, attaching it to each tie as you go.
This patriotic wreath rail was so quick and easy to do! And, even though we didn’t use a whole bunch of supplies, it looks so full and fabulous. I really love the mix of textures that comes from the mesh, ribbon, and garland. When you can add different textures to your creations they really come to life in a whole new way. I hope you love this project as much as I did! Happy crafting, friends!
