How to Create a Mardi Gras Hat Wreath Rail

Mardi Gras is an explosion of color and happiness, and what better inspiration do you need for a wreath? One feature I’ve always loved about Mardi Gras is the amazing hats, and I wanted to reflect this spontaneity in this wreath.

Mardi Gras is an epic holiday, simply due to the sheer exuberance that it represents for many people worldwide. It’s a time to let loose and do whatever you want, and I wanted to express those feelings in a fun wreath that’s as loud as the Carnival crowds and vivid enough to set your imagination alight.

DIY Mardi Gras Hat Wreath Rail

Plenty of simple techniques add an extra dimension to your wreath-making skills, and the only way to learn is through practice and experimentation. Pipe cleaners hold everything down, so it’s exceedingly simple to reverse any mistakes or remove an item that doesn’t look the way you hoped it might. Keep trying new things.

• Pipe cleaner
• Green mesh

• 1.5″ green jelly ribbon
• Purple mesh ribbon
• 2.5″ polka dot ribbon
• 2.5″ Black and white checkered ribbon
• Purple tubing
• Green tubing
• Gold tubing
• Ribbon tail board
• Scissors

Make Your Own Mardi Gras Hat Rail Instructions

1. Space out your six pipe cleaners across the entire rail.
2. Take the green mesh and attach it to one end of the tie. Then make a poof and attach the mesh to the next tie until you’ve reached the end of the rail. Fold the edges over the rail for a clean finish.
3. Use a box cutter for six pieces of gold mesh and six pieces of purple mesh. Roll the pieces of mesh into tight rolls. Cross one gold roll and one purple roll and attach these to one tie.
4. Use a ribbon tail board to measure 12 polka dot ribbon pieces, six pieces of green ribbon and purple ribbon. Attach two pieces of polka dot ribbon and one each of the green and purple ribbon to each tie.
5. Measure equal lengths of green, gold, and purple tubing. Twist all three colors together and add it to each tie.
6. Add the purple tinsel garland and take advantage of the natural curl.
7. Make a bow using the checkered ribbon and attach it to the rail’s center with another pipe cleaner.

The result will be a colorful celebration of all things Mardi Gras, especially when you continue to add your own flair to it. I had a lot of fun making this wreath and trying new materials. The holiday is festive and fun, and this Mardi Gras hat wreath rail captures those elements so well.
