How to Decorate a Ghost Gnome Wreath Rail

Decorate Your Own Gnome with a Ghost Wreath Rail Tutorial

I don’t know if you’ve ever wondered about this history about decorating for Halloween. It comes from people who lived 2000 years ago dressing up their houses to scare the presumed ghosts away. Now here we are in 2021 decorating to make our house either the cutest or the scariest!

Let’s take my painted wreath rail and create a cute Halloween decor to hang on my door. I hope you try this too for your own home or for a friend.

Supplies Needed for Decorating Gnome with a Ghost Wreath Rail

Instructions on How to Decorate a Gnome with a Ghost Wreath Rail

  1. Start attaching your pipe cleaners. Tie three at the bottom and four in the middle. Spread all of them evenly apart across the rail in a zigzag pattern.
  2. Next, cut 7- 20” pieces of the Black & Orange Halloween 10” deco mesh.
  3. Next, you’re going to take your 7 strips of deco mesh to make one ruffle for every twist tie. To create the ruffle, roll up the edges a bit and then scrunch to the center. Add the center part of the ruffle to the ties. If some of your board is showing, you can pull your mesh to the front and cover the blank space on your wreath rail.
  4. Make sure you have more room for your bow. I take the second pipe cleaner and loosen it up to make sure the bow is able to fit. Cut the other pipe cleaners down for a cleaner look.
  5. Next is to make some filler. I use my ribbon tail board to cut out 6 pieces of 2.5” ghost ribbon, 2.5” green striped, and the 1.5” Halloween striped ribbon. I wrap it around my board 6 times and I cut it off from the roll, remove the wrapped around ribbon, and cut the wrap where they all meet at the top. Once I have my 6-pieces of all three ribbons, I will trim the ends of the tails on the ribbon in angle or dovetail.
  6. Next, you will get one piece of ghost, green stripe, and Halloween striped ribbon tails, fold them in half and pinch the center together. I put the green on bottom, Halloween in the middle and the ghost ribbon on top. Attach the center pinch to the first twist tie on the wreath rail. Repeat with the remaining ribbon tails and twist ties leaving the second pipe cleaner alone for the bow. Now spread out your center tails in Xs and then Ks at both ends.
  7. To add some texture and bring out all of the colors to your design, start by cutting 6- 20” of purple tubing, take two pieces and make it into a lasso. Pinch the middle to make a bow, lay straight on the twist tie and twist it in. Repeat this to all of the twist ties except for the second pipe cleaner you are going to leave for your bow.
  8. Now a bow! Take two pipe cleaners and twist the ends together for your bow. Grab your ribbons. Start with a 2.5” of green striped ribbon, measure a 8” tail, pinch and hold onto then twist the ribbon and then measure it. Then make a 5” loop by measuring 10” on a measuring board and then twist.. Make another loop on the other side then trim after a 8” tail.
  9. I next added the 2.5” ghost ribbon, measured out a 8” tail, pinch and hold onto then twist the ribbon and then measured it. Then make a 5” loop by measuring 10” on a measuring board and then twist.. Make another loop on the other side then trim after a 8” tail.
  10.  and your loops are going to lay on top of each other and you will spread them out to make your bow.
  11. Now use the 1.5” Halloween striped ribbon, to repeat the same process making a 5” loop and 8” ribbon tails.
  12. Take two pipe cleaners and twist the ends together to make one long pipe cleaner. Remove your bow from your fingers and use the long pipe cleaner to secure the center of the bow, twisting it off at the back nice and tight.
  13. Use the pipe cleaners on the bow to push through the mesh and attach the bow to the wreath rail.
