Many of us are looking for the silver linings of the storm that has been this year. Today, I am showing you how to paint a bright and beautiful rainbow wreath rail that is sure to bring some cheer.

Summer time gives us so many choices when it comes to decor. It can be so hard to narrow down what projects to do from year to year. One of my favorites (and yours by the number of orders we get) has always been rainbows. In this video I show you step-by-step how to paint this colorful rainbow wreath rail.

Rainbow Wreath Rail – Paint by Line Tutorial

I find painting so soothing and relaxing. It’s especially so when the project I’m working on is as uplifting as this one. There is something so therapeutic about putting yourself into something you love. The repetition of paint strokes is meditative, a great way to recharge in the middle of a hectic day. I also had great company for this piece, my artistic daughter, Amelia! There’s a reason that painting parties have become increasingly popular. Painting while chatting with people you love is a really good time.

Another thing that makes painting even more fun is having the right equipment. One piece of equipment I can’t be without is my acrylic paint marker! I use it for touch ups and outlining. And, since I know I will be able to end my project by cleaning it up with my paint marker, I am able to relax and enjoy the painting process!

And, while we are on the subject of cleaning up, I give you another tip in this video: always have baby wipes on hand! If you get paint on a part of your project that you didn’t intend, quickly wipe it off with the baby wipe. Then, when it is dry, you can paint over the spot with the right color. Easy peasy and no evidence of your oops!

Supplies for Painting a Rainbow Wreath Rail

  • Red acrylic paint
  • Orange acrylic paint
  • Yellow acrylic paint
  • Green acrylic paint
  • Light blue acrylic paint
  • Blue acrylic paint
  • Purple acrylic paint
  • White acrylic paint
  • Granite gray acrylic paint
  • Flat paint brush, about the width of the rainbow stripes
  • Medium tip black acrylic paint marker

Paint by Line Instructions

  1. Paint the rainbow, starting with red and working your way down. When you get to the blues, do the light blue first followed by the darker bow then purple.
  2. Fill in the clouds with white paint.
  3. Add gray around the inside of the cloud, leaving some of the white along the edges.
  4. Use a heat gun to make sure the paint is dry before outlining. If you don’t have a heat gun, no problem, it will dry on its own given a little bit of time.
  5. Use the black acrylic paint marker to trace around the clouds.
  6. Repeat with each row of the rainbow.

Rainbows symbolize new beginnings and a promise of better things to come. They are fairly rare and the conditions have to be just right for us to see one. They are colorfully magical and someday I hope to find that promised pot of gold at the end of one. Until then, though, we can have fun painting together!
